WCCC Wednesday Night at The Brook, presented by Route 1 Vapors. had absolute chaos in the playoffs, as higher seeds went an astounding 2-6 in the 1st round, with only the #1 & #6 seeds surviving to play on.  Three double digit seeds made the semifinals, and the 14th seed made it all the way to the finals.  Scott Pelletier & Zach Magee were unfazed, however, grabbing the top seed and going wire-to-wire undefeated on the night, nine straight wins culminating in a straight sets victory in the finals over that aforementioned 14th seed, Robert Ortega & Eddie Azamor.

Game 1 was a game of wild swings, as an opening 4 by Pelletier was answered with a 9 by Ortega, with Pelletier dragging 2 more back and Magee grabbing a single to make it 9-7 to the underdogs after four rounds.  A 3 by Azamor and a 5 by Ortega made it 18-7 and it looked like the Cinderella run was continuing.  Pelletier & Magee slowed things down, though, with a single by Pelletier followed by a wash made it 18-8 before midnight struck and shattered the glass slipper, courtesy of a massive 10 round by Pelletier to even things at 18.  Ortega actually had a last gasp with a deuce to make it 20-18, but Pelletier finished things off in the eleventh round with a 3 to end a wild one by a score of 21-20.

Game 2 was not nearly as competitive, as the top seeds built a 7-2 lead after five rounds before Pelletier broke the ‘dogs for good with another 10 spot to make it 17-2, for all intents and purposes ending the competitive portion of proceedings.  Ortega did manage a 5 in response, but the tenth round saw Pelletier finish with panache, a fourbagger giving him 7 and his team the title by a score of 26-8.

Game 2 of the finals was super competitive compared to the third place game, where the Lander Boys, Shawn & Dominic, basically laid a Mafia hit on their opposition, Mindy Sponagle & Chris Paquette.  An opening 6 by Shawn, followed by a 10 by Dominic, and a final 5 by Shawn gave the January Player of the Month & the Father of the January Player of the Month a 21-0 bludgeoning in exactly three rounds.

Three top WCCC players took the top 3 SPR spots on the evening, with Scott Pelletier tops with an 8.55, with Dominic Lander at 8.41 and Wayne McCarthy 0.01 ahead of 4th with an 8.13.  For the 2nd week in a row, one player claimed a championship, top PPR, and most fourbaggers, as Pelletier led the way in that category as well with 9.

Airmail reached heights only seen once before, as it finished at a whopping $6372, or $1593 a bag, the 2nd highest total behind the $6633 reached on December 11th, 2019.  John Mahoney, the only player to sink an airmail bag in 2023, also became the first player to get drawn twice this year.  He could not repeat his feat though it was a hell of an effort, which means that we will certainly break the record with next week’s airmail.

We would like to thank our sponsors that make it all happen!
