Rain forced us indoors last night, with The Brook as welcoming hosts for WCCC Wednesday Night, presented by Route 1 Vapors. and we had quite the interesting night of cornhole.

Only one of the top 4 seeds made the semifinals, and none made the podium.  Scott Pelletier teamed with Kelsy LaRose, making her 2023 WCCC debut, to take on Phil Jackson & Mindy Sponagle.

Game 1 opened early in Jackson & Sponagle’s favor, as they led twice by 2, at 2-0 and 3-1 after four rounds.  Pelletier then went on an absolute tear, with a 3 that started an 8-0 run over the next five rounds that gave Pelletier & LaRose the lead 11-3 after nine rounds.  However, Jackson & Sponagle withstood that blow and a three, two washes, and a single made it 11-7 for the reverse Slurpee.  Pelletier continued his reign of terror to the dismay of the opposition, his single and a LaRose 4 a prelude to the knockout blow, a fourbagger for 8 that gave them a 24-7 win after 15 rounds.  Pelletier scored in five of his last six rounds for a total of 17 points – an unstoppable tidal wave.

Game 2 opened even more brightly than Game 1 did for Jackson & Sponagle, with a wash and a pair of deuces seeing them jump out to a 4-0 lead.  Pelletier, however, reached that level he has that very few can match, sinking 10 of his next 12 bags to turn that 4-0 deficit to a 17-4 lead after eight rounds.  Jackson & Sponagle were game opponents, scoring 4 points over the next three rounds to reduce their deficit to 17-8 and stem the tide.  It was just a finger in the dike, however, as Pelletier fired a deuce before LaRose clinched the title with a deuce of her own to complete the sweep by a score of 21-8.

The third place game was a slugfest, with top seeded Rich Bushway & Mark Tashjian squaring off with Mike McNamara Sr and Doco Davis.  A game of wild swings saw Davis grab a single to start before a deuce from Bushway gave them an early 2-1 lead.  A fourbagger wash was an omen of things to come, as Bushway struck with a 5 only to see Davis roar back with an 8 to see his side take a 9-7 lead after five action-packed rounds.  The haymakers kept coming, as Bushway fired immediately back with a snowman of his own to take a 15-9 lead.  Davis, undeterred, smashed right back with a 5 to make it 15-14.  Bushway kept rolling, a 4 pushing them to a 19-14 lead.  A pair of washes, including a gutsy one by McNamara to halt Bushway in his tracks, preceded a 6 by Davis to make it 20-19 in favor of McNamara and Davis.  McNamara, who had been outscored 19-0 to that point, then hit the jackpot with a 7 to finish off the brawl for a 27-19 victory and the final podiun spot.

Scott Pelletier’s 8.84 PPR was not only good enough for the gold, it was the best on this night.  John Mahoney was next with an 8.61, and two-time WCCC Player of the Month Chris Cole followed with an 8.16.  Pelletier’s 8.84 was fueled by a night-leading 12 fourbaggers.

Airmail made its way up to $1838, for $459 a bag, and John Mahoney found himself the first to toe the line three times in 2023.  4 close bags, including the final one that seemed to hover over the hole, but none hitting means the entire $1838 rolls over.

Our monthly Switcholio, presented by Route 1 Vapors. saw a major tournament winning duo team up to run it back at WCCC Wednesday Night at The Winner’s Circle

Rich Bushway & Kevin Lowry, who beat a stacked field in Old Orchard Beach for a major tournament win, got paired up in the playoffs and ran the table to do it again at the Circle.

Standing in their way in the finals was another powerhouse, the team of Dominic Lander & Scott Pelletier.   Game 1 started rather slowly, as an opening deuce by Lander was answered 6 points, but over four rounds, to make it 6-2 after five rounds.  Bushway then opened up a gap with 3, but Pelletier closed it back even further with a fourbagger to tighten things up to 9-8.  When it appeared it was going to be a tight affair throughout, Bushway & Lowry hit the accelerator, a pair of deuces answered by a deuce on a 12-10 round for Lander, before put together 5 straight scoring rounds to cruise to a 22-10 victory after sixteen rounds.  Remarkably, none of those 16 rounds featured a single wash.

Game 2 looked like the Bushway/Lowry momentum would continue, as a pair of opening deuces saw them jump out to a quick 4-0 lead.  Lander & Pelletier, however, found another gear of their own, a 4 and a 3 sparking a four round run that culminated in an 11-0 run and a 11-4 lead after six rounds.  Bushway was able to stem the tide momentarily with two, but Pelletier struck back with 3 to give his side a 14-6 lead after eight rounds and a ton of momentum.  That wave of momentum was first halted by the first wash of the finals, an amazing twenty-five rounds in;  the wave then came crashing down with four straight rounds of scoring by Bushway & Lowry, with a Bushway single closing things to a 14-13 deficit after thirteen rounds.  The 2nd (and final) wash of the finals was followed by a Bushway two followed by a Lowry 3 to make it a 12-0 run and an 18-14 lead.  With the OOB champs poised for the sweep, Lander wasn’t ready to go home, a 4 spot leveling things at 18-all.  Lowry, however, did want to go home and closed the show with a 5 to cap a 23-18 victory and sweep their opponents after eighteen hard fought Game 2 rounds.

We did have a game between the top two seeds, but in the third place game as both were beaten semifinalists.  Top seed Matty Iannello & Keegan Langlois faced off against 2nd seeded Chris Cole & Mike McNamara Sr.  This looked like a competitive one early, as things were knotted 5-5 after four rounds and 7-5 in favor of Cole & McNamara after six.  From there Iannello & Langlois were unstoppable, with six straight scoring rounds, including two 4s, a 5, and a finishing 7 to grab the final podium spot by force in a 26-7 thumping.

This night was also the debut of our two tiered playoff system, where those not making the main playoffs got a second chance in the consolation playoffs.  The consolation was won by Brian Kelly, who as a walker cut a swath through three teams en route to the consolation title, culminating in a 23-6 win over Jessica Kelly (Brian’s wife) & Zack Hoover (not Brian’s wife).

Top PPRs on the evening went to Keegan Langlois with an 8.66, with Brian Johnson next with an 8.11.  Tom O’Hara and Scott Pelletier tied for third with a 7.74.  Langlois fueled that 8.66 with 11 fourbaggers to top the field.

If you’re sick of reading about Keegan Langlois, you’re out of luck, as he got drawn to take his crack at airmail.  With $1665 on offer, for $416 a bag, he hit the pipe with every bag but was able to sink none, rolling the entire pot over to next week.

Mother Nature, that skank, forced us indoors this week to The Brook for WCCC Wednesday Night presented by Route 1 Vapors.

It was an all-North Shore Cup III champions final, with Dominic Lander & Brian Johnson facing off against Chris Cole & Phil Jackson.

Game 1 was a wild, short affair with several swings of momentum, reminiscent of the Hagler-Hearns fight from 1985.  Cole & Jackson opened hot, with a 6 and a 4 seeing them race out to a 10-0 lead after two rounds and making it look like a blowout was in order.  However, an immediate 5 from Johnson followed by a deuce by Lander made it 10-7 and game on again.  Cole responded with a deuce of his own to extend their lead to 12-7. but Lander then brandished his sickle, posting rounds of 6 and 5 sandwiched around Johnson beating off his opponent for a 3 of his own, and when the dust settled after the onslaught Game 1 went to Lander & Johnson by a score of 21-12 after eight rock ’em sock ’em rounds.

Another wild slugfest ensued in Game 2, but a little tamer than Game 1.  This time, Jackson’s opening 4 was matched by Lander in the second round, and after that trading 1s and 2s to make it 8-6 Cole & Jackson after seven rounds.  The eighth round was noteworthy in that it was the first wash of the finals sixteen rounds in.  It also happened to be the high water mark for Cole & Jackson, as Johnson hit lucky 7 the next round, Lander followed with 5, and Johnson poured it on with a deuce to put his team on the brink with a 20-8 lead.  Cole dug deep in the face of adversity, however, and posted a last gasp 5 before Johnson finally finished with a 4 to give them a 24-13 victory and a straight sets sweep.

The third place game saw experienced campaigners Ryan Goding & Keegan Langlois against a surprise package in the form of Heidi Harrington & Chris Paquette.  This one was more of a slow grind compared to the finals, as the favorites built a 7-1 lead after five rounds before Langlois posted a 4 to turn it into a seeming runaway at 11-1.  Harrington & Paquette clawed back, though, with 5 points over the next four rounds to get back to within striking distance at 11-6 after ten rounds.  Goding & Langlois turned it on at this point to end things, a deuce by Goding and a three by Langlois leading to a 10 spot by Goding against his lady to ensure not only a podium spot but likely a chilly ride home.

Wayne McCarthy fired his way to the #1 playoff seed with a 9.08 PPR to lead the way on this night, while Brian Johnson was just behind at 9.05.  Ryan Goding took the third spot with an 8.64.  Johnson’s PPR was fed by 14 fourbaggers, which paced the field.

Airmail climbed to $1544, and Tom O’Hara got the call for the 2nd time in three weeks.  Unlike his rushed effort from two weeks ago, he found the hole with one bag for $386.  $1158 will roll over to next week.

We celebrated our 7th birthday on a chilly WCCC Wednesday Night, presented by Route 1 Vapors. at the Winner’s Circle, and despite the conditions 33 hardy souls came out to do battle.

The finals went the maximum three games, featuring Gary Clifford & Tyler Callahan vs Katy Singlar & Brian Johnson.  Game 1 looked to be a quick affair early on, as Clifford & Callahan jumped out to a 6-1 lead after four rounds and a 10-1 lead after seven.  Singlar & Johnson, being experienced campaigners, were not deterred, chipping away 4 points without reply over the next six rounds to get back to 10-5 after thirteen rounds, an omen for things to come.  A pair of deuces by Clifford and Callahan restored their lead to 9, but a fourbagger for 4 by Johnson was the start of four straight scoring rounds by Singlar & Johnson, with that 4 followed by a single and a pair of deuces to level things at 14-all an incredible nineteen rounds in.  A twentieth round wash was followed by a Callahan haymaker, with half a dozen on a fourbagger to bring them to match point, but Johnson roared back with 3 of his own to make it 20-17.  The twenty-third round (yes, 23 rounds) will forever live on in the memory of those who witnessed it.  With Singlar sitting 2 on Callahan with the final bag to come, Callahan threw a bag that sat on the board behind the hole and started the slowest descent in cornhole history, turning at roughly the same speed that milk does.  However, the bag never stopped moving, and echoing Caddyshack or perhaps Tiger Woods’ chip at the 2005 Masters, eventually fell into the hole to give Clifford & Callahan a 21-17 Game 1 victory and Clifford road rash as he dropped to the ground in delighted shock.

That would have been an epic climax to the night, but in the best-of-3 finals format there was more work to be done.  Game 2 saw an end change, with Clifford now matched against Singlar and Callahan against Johnson.  The 2nd game opened with a Johnson single before Clifford & Callahan roared back with 10 unanswered to make it 10-1 after five rounds and seemed on their way to a sweep, riding the momentum of the exhilarating Game 1 win.  However, Singlar & Johnson used their experience to not be rattled, responding with a deuce and then a Johnson 5 to get it right back to 10-8.  Clifford & Callahan hit right back with a 2 and a 3 to extend their lead to 15-8, but then saw the wrong end of a 2 and a 5, putting the teams on level terms at 15 after eleven rounds.   A grinding 5-5 wash between Clifford & Singlar set up Johnson to close out Game 2 with panache, as his fourbagger was only answered with 5 points, giving Johnson a 7 and his team a 22-15 victory to knot things up at 1.

After two scintillating games of cornhole, the live crowd and the viewers watching Facebook Live expected an epic 3rd game for the ages.  What they got was a prolonged drubbing, as a massive 9 round turned a 1-0 lead into a 10-0 rout for Singlar & Johnson after four rounds, and although Clifford & Callahan made them work for it, they rolled to a 20-0 lead after ten one-sided rounds.  Clifford fired his final shot with a deuce in round eleven to avoid the shutout, but Johnson calmly finished things with a 3 to win Game 3 and the title by a score of 23-2.

The drama we saw for 2/3 of the finals was not replicated in the 3rd place game, as WCCC newcomer Luis Armas and WCCC Men’s Player of the Year frontrunner Chris Cole absolutely obliterated Kevin Gallagher & Rich Bushway.  Cole led off with half a dozen, and Armas hit lucky 7 on his first round to jump out to 13-0 after two.  Bushway grabbed a single, but then Armas hit back with a deuce and Cole hit 6 for the 2nd time to claim the final spot after five rounds and a 21-1 win.

Some different faces at the top of the PPR leaderboard this week, as Brian Johnson’s title winning run was fueled by an 8.14 PPR.  Sandy Peacock was next with 7.56, while Matt Simons iced the rest of the field with a 7.44.  Gary Clifford outpaced the rest of the field on a night of difficult conditions to snag 7 fourbaggers.

Airmail is getting healthier again, hitting $1272 for $318 a bag, and WCCC Vice President Sean McKinnon got the call.  The pipe was not kind on this day, with the one bag that made contact hitting the rim, popping up, and glancing harmlessly away, leaving the entire $1272 to roll over.

Rain postponed our 2023 debut at The Winner’s Circle, but WCCC Wednesday Night at The Brook, presented by Route 1 Vapors. did not have a damper put on it, as some great competition ended with a thrilling finals.

WCCC stalwarts Wayne McCarthy & Tom O’Hara faced off in the finals against new WCCC member Greg Prescott and Bora Jean, the only two-time winner of The Ed Martin Memorial Classic.

The finals newcomers got off to a massive start in Game 1, erasing an early McCarthy-O’Hara 2-0 lead with with an onslaught of points, taking four rounds to cruise to a 14-2 lead after seven.  Their momentum completely derailed, however, as McCarthy & O’Hara patiently chipped away, posting deuces in four of the next five rounds and then riding a couple of washes before putting up a 4 to improbably tie the opener at 14-14.  They continued to ride the wave, with a deuce by O’Hara and a three by McCarthy put them on the brink with a 19-14 lead after sixteen rounds. Prescott & Jean didn’t roll over, though, as Jean was able to claim a deuce and first bags for Prescott, but the eighteenth round was decisive, a couple of Prescott bags off the board punished mercilessly by McCarthy, who recorded a 5 to take Game 1 by a 24-16 final.

Game 2 opened rather similar to Game 1, with Prescott & Jean flying out to a 7-1 lead after three rounds, but McCarthy & O’Hara didn’t bide their time here coming back, a single and a treble making it 7-5 after six rounds.  The next six rounds they played to a stalemate, as each team posted half a dozen points to grind their way to a 12-10 Prescott-Jean lead after twelve rounds.  Jean then exploded, his fourbagger swamping O’Hara’s 5, a 7 spot making it 19-10.  McCarthy had a last gasp deuce, but Jean answered with one of his own to make it a 21-12 final after 15 grueling rounds.

This led to the decisive Game 3, where once again the opening was one-sided, but this time in favor of McCarthy & O’Hara, who bounced right back from their Game 2 defeat to race out to a 13-0 lead after five rounds.  Although Jean was able to post a pair of 4 point rounds over the next five rounds, McCarthy & O’Hara were able to keep them at arms length with 3 points to sit at 16-8 after ten.  After trading deuces, McCarthy faced a board where holing out would finish things, and hole out he did, taking the final 4 points in a 22-10 victory to score the well-earned victory.

The third place game saw two teams where a podium regular paired with a partner seeking their maiden cash of the year;  Domenic Branden & Rachel Jean faced off against Rich Bushway & Sean McKinnon.  This was a game of swings, as after Bushway opened with a single, Branden & Jean scored in four of the next five rounds to make things look like a rout at 13-1.  Bushway, however, showed why he’s an ACL Pro, coming back with a perfect 10 to shrink their deficit from 12 to 2.  Branden & Jean took this haymaker and went right back to work, scoring in each of the next four rounds to run out 22-11 winners after eleven rounds, Branden’s deuce putting them on the final podium spot.

Two of the top three PPR spots of the night were occupied by the night’s finalists, with Wayne McCarthy’s 8.65 and Bora Jean’s 8.39 sandwiching finals regular Chris Cole’s 8.41.  McCarthy also topped the fourbagger charts with a lucky 13.

The ever-dwindling email settled at $1232 for $308 a bag, and first-timer Troy “Scooba” Megneys got the call.  He left no doubt he was taking home cash by sinking his very first bag, and then doubled his pleasure with the 3rd bag also finding the mark, earning him $616 and leaving the same amount for next week.

Our penultimate Wednesday of the 2022-2023 season at The Brook, presented by Route 1 Vapors. featured Chris Cole’s white hot run continue with his 7th finals appearance in 8 weeks, this time with WCCC Hall of Famer Scott Pelletier.

Cole & Pelletier were actually the lower seed despite finishing 2nd in the round robin, as top seeded Kevin Gallagher & Mindy Sponagle made the finals, a chalk outcome not seen lately amongst the chaos of the playoffs in recent weeks,

The pairing of two North Shore Cup III champions was a dominant one, sweeping two games in the finals by a combined 42-3 to finish off a 10-0 night.  Both Cole & Pelletier are now tied with two others with 4 tournament wins in 2023, and Cole has 8 finals appearances in 15 weeks so far this year.

Game 1 was the more competitive of the two, a slight distinction given the carnage.  It took seven rounds to finish off the 21-2 thrashing, Game 2 was more of the same, a five round 21-1 romp that finished off the night.  In Game 2, Cole & Pelletier scored 47 of the possible 60 points they could over the five rounds.

The third place game was much more competitive, with 5th seeded Rich Bushway & Mike Pigatti facing off against 11th seed Tyler Callahan & John Mahoney.  The first six rounds were a seesaw affair, which saw Bushway & Pigatti lead 9-7.  A 5 spot for Pigatti in the 7th round seemed to point the way to bronze, but that was the last points his team were to score, as two 4s, a deuce, and a dagger 6 by Callahan finished off a 23-14 win for Callahan & Mahoney and saw them claim the final podium spot.

The cream rose to the top of the PPR rankings for the week, as Scott Pelletier had a sterling 8.43, while Dominic Lander’s 8.03 and Rich Bushway’s 8.00 were the only others to reach the 8 PPR mark.  Pelletier also reclaimed the year’s fourbagger lead by leading the way on the night with 8.

The airmail reached $2398, and longtime airmail stalwart Jesob Rockwell got the call to toe the line.  His first two throws were close but no cigar, and then he found his airmail mojo and buried the final two to take home half the pot, $1199.  Therefore, the other $1199 rolls over to next week.

Our 3rd Wednesday of March, presented by Route 1 Vapors. saw Chris Cole’s three-peat bid get all the way to the finals.

Cole teamed with the maven of Miller High Life himself, Bill Walsh, to make a run to the finals, where they met another experienced championship round duo in Wayne McCarthy & Domenic Branden.  This was another insane night where chalk melted away, as 6 of the 8 top seeds failed to win a playoff game, and the finals was a 12 seed (Cole & Walsh) vs 11 seed (McCarthy & Branden) affair.

Game 1 opened brightly for McCarthy & Branden, as they raced to a 5-0 lead after four rounds.  Two rounds later, however, Cole & Walsh had fought back to take a 6-5 lead.  The see-saw kept tipping, though, as the next two rounds saw McCarthy & Branden retake the lead by a score of 8-6.  Over the next three rounds they saw it seemingly slip away, as Cole sandwiched a 4 and a 2 around a Walsh deuce to make it 14-8 after eleven rounds.  McCarthy, resilient as ever, fired back with a 5 of his own to get back to a point, but Cole with a tough 5-3 deuce widened the lead to 16-13 in his team’s favor.  Poised to finish things off, instead McCarthy grabbed 2 and Branden fourbagged his way to a 6 for the smash & grab 21-16 victory to close out Game 1.

Game 2 had about as much drama as a North Korean election, as McCarthy & Branden meted out what was essentially a back-alley beating.  McCarthy had two rounds of 6, Branden had a 7 and a 2, and Game 2 was four rounds and out in a 21-0 drubbing to complete the sweep.

The third place game saw the only high seed to make the semifinals, #2 Matt Martin & Kevin Gallagher, take on 9th seeded Brian Johnson & Amanda Spillane, who was in her first money round game.  The underdogs looked like they were going to make relatively short work of things, with Johnson sandwiching a pair of 5 point rounds around a single from Gallagher to jump out to a 10-1 lead after three rounds.  Martin & Gallagher stormed right back, however, as Gallagher grabbed 6 right back and after six rounds his side led 11-10.  Johnson responded with a 3, and Spillane snagged a single to reclaim the lead 14-11.  Some back and forth got us to a 15-15 after eleven rounds, setting up a race to 6 to finish things off.  Gallagher ensured his team would hit the tape first, posting a 4 the next round and then following a wash with a deuce to close out the 21-15 win and claim the final podium spot.

Dominic Lander lapped the field in PPR, posting a stellar 9.15.  Brian Johnson followed with an 8.5, and John Mahoney was 3rd by .01 with an 8.42.  Lander also returned to fourbagger form, leading the way with 9.

The airmail went off at $1908, and it was WCCC Recording Secretary and known female repellent Mike Pigatti that got the call to throw for the cash.  Although he did slightly hit the pipe with a couple of his efforts, he proved that the pipe is female, as it repelled his attempts to win money.  All $1908 rolls over to next week.

The first March edition of WCCC Wednesday Night at The Brook, presented by Route 1 Vapors. had 52 players come out to partake in our monthly Switcholio, and chaos reigned again, as the playoffs featured a 16-1 upset, only one single digit seed making the semifinals, and a finals with two double digit seeds.  As wild as the playoffs leading to the finals were, they paled in comparison to what was to come in a Game 2 that no one who saw it will ever forget.

Chris Cole & Eric Kenney came out of the 12 seed and blew away everyone in their path to the finals, outscoring their opposition by a University of Georgia-esque score of 65-7.  The 10th seed, Phil Jackson & Mike McNamara Sr, faced a little more resistance, outscoring opponents 70-25 en route to the finals showdown.

Game 1 opened hot for both teams, with a Jackson fourbagger only claiming a deuce after Kenney countered with a 10.  Some more sparring made it 5-5 after five rounds, and Cole & Kenney squeaked ahead 6-5 after seven, not looking like the dominant force that had laid waste to the field previously.  That, however, changed in the blink of an eye, as an onslaught of points in each of the next four rounds, with Cole & Kenney draining 13 of their next 16 bags and bludgeoning their way to a 24-5 Game 1 win.

And then…Game 2.  This one will be talked about for a long, long time.  It looked like your standard blowout in favor of Jackson & McNamara, as they put on a blitz similar to the one they suffered in Game 1, cruising to a 20-0 lead after five rounds.  As likely everyone reading this knows, 20 is not 21, and you need 21 to claim a win.  Right at this moment, Cole & Kenney seemed to regain their previous form, with a 3 followed by a 6, and then after a wash another 6 to turn 20-0 into 20-15 in four rounds.  The next one, the tenth round, saw what looked like a win for Jackson & McNamara until it wasn’t.  With Kenney having thrown all four bags and Jackson having last bag, Jackson had  7-6 advantage, meaning that Jackson could have thrown his bag anywhere in the universe and his team wins.  However, there was some serious miscommunication afoot, and McNamara advised Jackson to board his bag.  Action Jackson, who should have become Inaction Jackson at this very moment, complied, and his bag landing on the board was just enough to allow one of Kenney’s hanging bags to fall, turning what was a 7-6 round into an 8-8 wash.  McNamara indicated after that he thought Kenney’s bag was their own and there was no danger of them losing.  Cole took advantage of their stay of execution, fourbagging for a deuce, having the other end wash, then posting a 4 to complete the epic comeback, down 20-0 but winning 21-20 to complete the sweep and take top honors for the night.

The third place game offered none of the drama of the finals, with the only single digit seed to win multiple playoff games, #3 Mindy Sponagle & Kevin Lowry, taking on the the 16th seed, the lowest in the playoff field, in the form of Corey Rabeau & Alan Titcomb.  Unfortunately for the Cinderellas, midnight struck swiftly and brutally, as Sponagle & Lowry led 10-0 after three rounds and cruised to a 21-2 decision in eight rounds to claim the final podium spot.

PPR again was not an indicator of team success, as the top 3 this week won a single playoff game between them.  Scott Pelletier led the way with an 8.85, and Tom O’Hara was a distant 2nd with an 8.37, being the only two to crack the 8 PPR barrier.  John Mahoney was close, however, with his 7.95 good enough for 3rd.  Pelletier also claimed the lead in the yearly fourbagger race by claiming victory in the nightly race with 9 fourbaggers.

Airmail reached & breached the $5000 mark again, settling at $5188 for $1297 a bag.  Jamie Paquette got the call to throw for the cash, and had the pipe been situated back and to the left about 8 inches he would have claimed 3/4 of the pot.  Alas for the Salisbury resident, it wasn’t, and all of the cash rolls over to next week.

WCCC Wednesday Night at The Brook, presented by Route 1 Vapors. saw 64 players toe the line, and it was another night of upsets, as 5 of the top 8 seeds failed to win a playoff game, and the 9, 11 & 13 seeds all made the semifinals.

The finals reflected that parity, as they went the maximum three games, with the 2 seed Jim Leonard & Jack Jennings facing off against 9th seeded Jesob Rockwell & Domenic Branden.

Game 1 saw the favorites jump out to a 4-0 lead after three rounds, but that was shortlived as Rockwell & Branden took over from there, Rockwell’s 5 followed by three more scoring rounds found the score 12-4 after seven rounds.  A fourbagger deuce by Jennings pulled 2 back, but his side could never get a real foothold in the game, and Rockwell & Branden patiently ground down their opponents in a 24-11 victory after fifteen rounds.

Game 2 was similar, with the Game 1 winners leaping out to a 4-0 lead, then falling behind 6-4, before arriving at an 8-8 stalemate after seven rounds.  A Leonard 4 was then rebutted with a Rockwell fourbagger deuce, but three straight scoring rounds put Leonard & Jennings on the brink of forcing Game 3.  A 4 for Rockwell made things tighter, but Leonard’s deuce in the fourteenth round closed out a 21-14 victory and forced Game 3 for all the marbles.

Game 3 set to follow the pattern of the first two tilts, with Rockwell & Branden jumping out to an 8-0 lead after three and Leonard halving the lead the very next round.  That would prove to be the last points from the Leonard/Jennings duo, however, as over the next five rounds Rockwell & Branden pulled away, alternating scores and washes to build a 20-4 lead, and Rockwell finished proceedings with panache, draining a fourbagger to post a 5 and point the way to a 25-4 Game 3 win to claim the crown.

The third place game was a double digit seed battle, with 11th seeded Adams McKinnon & Brian Foster squaring up with 13th seeded Brian Johnson & Cathy MacKay.

An even battle saw tens across the board, with the score tied 10-10 after ten rounds.  McKinnon & Foster seemed to run out of gas at this point, as a fourbagger 4 from Johnson led to a McKinnon single, then Johnson slapped up half a dozen to get to 20-11, and MacKay was able to squeeze out a single to claim the final podium spot after fourteen rounds by a score of 21-11.

PPR performance did not lead to playoff success, as the top 3 PPRs of the week combined to go 1-2 in the playoffs.  Glenn Krick had a stellar 9.33 despite not making the 16 team bracket, while Scott Pelletier continued his fine run of form with an 8.56, and Ryan Deschenes didn’t win thousands in airmail but did have the third best PPR at 8.34. Pelletier & Deschenes also shared the fourbagger lead with 7 apiece.

Speaking of Ryan Deschenes, his big airmail night last week still left a healthy rollover, and the pot grew to $4589, for $1147 a bag,  Amanda Spillane was the last person to buy tickets, and ended up being the chosen one for this week’s shot at the cash.  All four bags were in the vicinity of the pipe, but none found the mark, rolling over the full amount to next week’s Switcholio.

WCCC Wednesday Night at The Brook, presented by Route 1 Vapors. was a crazy night with 72 throwers toeing the line, but a familiar face ended up on top, with Scott Pelletier extending his personal winning streak to 18, this time with Chris Cole, en route to a 2nd straight Wednesday night title.

Looking to derail the Pell Express were the duo of Glenn Krick & Craig Dutton, and they showed in Game 1 that they would give no quarter.  In a game where the biggest lead was 5 (and the game was again tied after the subsequent round), both teams beat the hell out of each other,  In a twenty-one round epic, 11 fourbaggers were thrown, with Cole & Krick themselves having three 12 point washes.  It appeared that Krick had lined his side up for the win with a single to make it 19-16, but Pelletier was able to hit a 5 in the twenty-first round for blackjack and the Game 1 win by a score of 21-19.

Game 2 was not as close of a battle, as Pelletier & Cole gave up 3 in the first round then posted a 10 over the next two, a Pelletier 4 and a Cole 6 opening the floodgates.  Krick & Dutton tried to hold against the tide, even getting a 4 from Krick to get it to 15-8 after nine rounds, but Pelletier was inevitable, finishing proceedings with one last fourbagger to post a 6 and finish off a 21-8 victory and a sweep.

The third place game was a blowout from the beginning, as Evanda Jackson & Eddie Azamor led 9-0 after the first round and didn’t give up a point over the final seven rounds in a 22-2 ten round destruction of Robert Ortega & Matteo Taormina.

The champions dominated SPR, with Scott Pelletier’s 8.77 and Chris Cole’s 8.51 split up by Robert Ortega’s 8.72.  Glenn Krick, 4th in PPR, led the fourbagger count with a solid 10.

The airmail reached new heights, with the old record of $6633 being broken by 15% and over a thousand dollars, settling at $7761 for $1940 a bag.  Shockingly, Ryan Deschenes, who hit two bags for $3316 on the previous record breaking night, got drawn again.  As the great Yogi Berra once said, it was deja vu all over again, as Deschenes again hit two bags on the record setting night, taking home $3880 and becoming an all-time airmail legend.
