4/13/22: M&M Melt In The Hole, Not In The Finals; Airmail Pipe Passes Its Sternest Test Yet

WCCC Wednesday Night at The Brook, presented by Route 1 Vapors, resembled a buddy cop show, with good friends Steve Marshall & John Mahoney locking up the competition, sweeping 9 games to claim the top spot in our weekly blind draw.  It was a team effort all the way, with Mahoney having a dominant performance until the finals, where he struggled out of the gate before proving it’s not how you start, it’s how you finish, posting a momentum-changing 12-7 round against Steve Singlar, making a 16-12 deficit into a 17-16 lead before Marshall, who outscored Dominic Lander to the tune of 1.33 PPR, scored 5 points of his own to finish off a title-winning 22-16 win over Singlar & Lander.  Singlar & Lander led the finals 10-0 after 3 rounds before being outscored 22-6 the rest of the way

In the 3rd place game, Ryan Goding & Rich Bushway claimed the bronze with a 28-16 decision over Katy Singlar & Wayne McCarthy in a game that was much closer than the score made it appear, with Bushway ending affairs with a 12-4 round on McCarthy to climb onto his WCCC-leading 9th podium of 2022.

John Mahoney was the king of PPR on the night, posting a sterling 8.65, including one perfect game (12 for 12 in the hole) and another with 18 of 20 in the hole.  Dominic Lander followed with an 8.32, and Katy Singlar was close behind with an 8.30.  Mahoney also banged in the most fourbaggers, with his 9 bringing him to top of the 2022 leaderboard with 59 total.

This was the third week for the airmail pipe, and it got its sternest test in the name of two-time ACL Pro Rich Bushway.  Bushway wasn’t able to find the mark, however, and wasn’t super close to doing so, rolling over a total of $1559 to next week.

We would like to thank our sponsors that make it all happen!

4/6/22: The Board Dominates The Boards; The Notorious TOB Goes 0-For-Airmail

WCCC Wednesday Night at The Brook, presented by Route 1 Vapors, found two players ascending to the top step of the podium for the first time in 2022, as Dominic Lander & Phil Jackson, both WCCC board members, tore a swath through the competition, going a perfect 9-0 to claim the title with little resistance.  The only speed bump came in the final, where they raced out to a 15-0 lead against the duo of Craig Anderson & Jack Jennings before finding themselves in a dogfight at 15-14.  However, Jackson fourbagged while Anderson could only manage two in and two on to give his side a 19-14 lead, and then Lander posted a 10 spot to seal the deal when Jennings could only muster a 3 to end things at 26-14.  Although both Lander & Jackson were at the bottom of the Top 10 in PPR for the night, the PPR differential was a different story, with Lander posting a 1.51 PPR differential and Jackson a 1.15, showing that they were playing smart, situational cornhole.  That said, Lander almost had a perfect game in the round robin with an 11 out of 12 in the hole performance.

The 3rd place game saw Rich Gabe continue his excellent run of podiums (60% of all appearances in 2022) with Joe Jenkinson as they outlasted a game team of Keegan Leary & Mindy Sponagle by a 23-15 decision.

Brian Johnson lapped the field in PPR, with a best of the night 8.79.  2nd was Craig Dutton, a finalist last week, who posted an 8.18.  John Mahoney claimed the 3rd PPR spot with a nice 8.15 mark.  Rich Gabe led all throwers with 9 fourbaggers on his way to the bronze.

The airmail pipe made its 2nd appearance, and The Notorious TOB, Travis O’Brien, got the call to take aim at the pipe, but didn’t threaten the cylinder, rolling the full $1368 over to next week.

3/30/22: NYC Has Broadway, The WCCC Has Bushway; Airmail Veteran Gets Smoked By The Pipe

WCCC Wednesday Night at The Brook, presented by Route 1 Vapors, has been defined in 2022 by spells of domination.  First it was Wayne McCarthy going on a winning streak, now Rich Bushway has gone on a white hot streak, going 10-0 on the night to give himself a 19 game winning streak with 26 wins in his last 28 games.  Needless to say, his perfect 10 saw him claim his 2nd straight title, 5th of the year, and his 8th finals appearance in 11 appearances.  He did not carry his partner, however, as the very solid Craig Dutton actually outperformed Bushway in PPR with a 0.16 advantage.  They were not challenged in the playoffs, with wins of 17, 19, and 18 leading up to the championship game, where they smashed a good pairing of Craig Anderson & Glenn Krick, who had wins of 6, 18, and 23 of their own leading to the finals.  Bushway & Dutton brushed aside Anderson & Krick by a score of 26-3 in the final, showing ultimate supremacy over the field of 53 players.  Dutton had a remarkable 14 of 16 bags in the hole in the final, while Bushway experimented with his airmail, throwing 5 off, but still hit the mark enough to claim a 2.2 point advantage each round.

The 3rd place game saw Jodie Voishnis solidify her credentials as the top WCCC women’s player of the first quarter of 2022 by pairing with Wayne McCarthy to end an upstart run by Jamie Paquette & Phil Jackson by a 23-5 decision.

Your champions claimed two of the three top PPRs for the night, with Craig Dutton leading the way with 8.30, and Rich Bushway taking the 3rd spot with 8.14.  Another D wedged his way between the champions, with Dominic Lander throwing his way to the 2nd spot at 8.18, mostly on the strength of 10 fourbaggers, which led the way for the night.

Airmail was deja vu all over again, as for the 2nd time this year someone got called to the line for the second consecutive week, with Zack Hoover’s feat earlier in the year matched by Jesob Rockwell.  Whereas Hoover was able to win himself some cash both weeks, Rockwell went home empty handed, but with a catch – we unveiled our new airmail pipe this week.  Eyewitness accounts vary, but everyone agrees Rockwell would have hit two airmails on the old box, with some even claiming three.  The new pipe did its job, however, and the pot rolls over to next week at $1126.

3/23/22: Lucky 7 For Bushway, Great Debut For Piecuch; An Old Rock Rolls Airmail

WCCC Wednesday Night at The Brook, presented by Route 1 Vapors, saw the ying and yang of old and new at the top, as Rich Bushway made his 7th appearance in the finals in 2022, while partner Jeff Piecuch was on his maiden WCCC voyage.  The blend of WCCC experience and newness produced gold, as Bushway & Piecuch swept 9 games en route to taking the title.  Neither had massive PPR numbers, but this was a night of strategic throwing, as Bushway outscored opponents by 1.74 points per round, while Piecuch held serve at a +0.02 clip.  Although they ended the night undefeated, they needed every last throw in the final, as they had to face the loaded duo of Scott Pelletier & Alex Szymanski.  After each team landed a bunch of haymakers, Bushway & Piecuch prevailed in a 23-20 epic that was every bit as good as advertised.

The 3rd place game saw Brian Johnson claim his third bronze of the season, while Katy Singlar snagged her first podium with a 23-7 blitzing of Craig Anderson & Jesob Rockwell.

John Mahoney lapped the field in PPR, posting a dominant 8.81 to lead all players.  Dominic Lander followed with 8.23, and Scott Pelletier logged an 8.09 on his way to the silver.  9 fourbaggers led the way again, with Dominic Lander reaching that mark.

Jesob Rockwell, the record holder for most bags hit in one night of airmail and also the record single-night money winner, got his ticket called – and the first one of the strip to boot!  $1141 was on offer, and Rockwell hit one bag to earn himself a $285 payday.  $856 will roll over to next week.

3/16/22: Edge of Seventeen For Sawdust; Don’t @ Craig Anderson About Airmail

WCCC Wednesday Night at The Brook, presented by Route 1 Vapors, is starting to become Wayne McCarthy’s personal playground, as he teamed with Brian Johnson to go undefeated for the 2nd Wednesday in a row, making two straight tournament wins and a 17 game winning streak for McCarthy.

Johnson had a dominant night, with his worst PPR for any game being 8.14, and he earned 2.2 points per round for his team on average in the finals.  McCarthy & Johnson averaged a 15 point margin of victory in the playoffs, and ended affairs by pulling away to take a 24-10 decision over Rich Bushway & Kevin Delaney in the finals.

Mark Tashjian & Scott Pelletier were able to snag the final podium spot with a hard-fought 21-17 victory over birthday girl Mindy Sponagle and Dave MacKay.

Top 3 PPR for the night were Brian Johnson with 8.80, Steve Marshall at 8.30, and Scott Pelletier at 8.20.  Rich Bushway pounded in 9 fourbaggers to lead all players in that category

Craig Anderson (@ in Scoreholio for the uninitiated) got the call for airmail at $957, for $239 a bag.  Anderson left not one but TWO bags on top of the airmail box, but none slithered into the hole, leaving the entire $957 to rollover to next week.

3/9/22: The Field Gets Sawdusted; Mahoney Cannot Mahone In On Airmail

WCCC Wednesday Night at The Brook, presented by Route 1 Vapors, “saw” another invincible performance, as Wayne McCarthy & Mike Gertz went a perfect 8-0 to claim victory on a snowy night that still attracted 49 willing and able throwers.

McCarthy & Gertz finished one point short of averaging a 20 point margin of victory in the round robin portion of proceedings, before dominating the playoffs as well, with the closest call being a 23-12 decision over Jocelyn Ema & Brian Johnson.  The finals were anti-climatic, with Chris Cole & WCCC newcomer Tom O’Hara making a run before falling 22-4.  McCarthy had a great finals, only having one non-scoring bag and averaging a 2.8 differential per round.

Ema & Johnson didn’t let their semifinal disappointment prevent them from claiming the final podium spot with a 22-3 drubbing of Jack Jennings & Ryan Jepson in the 3rd place tilt.

Top 3 PPR for the night were Wayne McCarthy with 8.43, Brian Johnson at 8.04, and John Mahoney at 7.64.  Mahoney also led all players for the second week running in fourbaggers, this time with 8.

John Mahoney, whose sponsors must love seeing his name all over this report,  got called for airmail on top of everything else he did.   Unfortunately for Mahoney (and said sponsors), he was unable to find the hole, though he did leave a bag on top of the box.  The pot was $732, for $183 a bag, and all rolls over to next week.

3/2/22: Bushway & Leary Are Invincible; Newcomer Is Old Hand At Airmail

WCCC Wednesday Night at The Brook, presented by Route 1 Vapors, was absolutely dominated by Rich Bushway and Keegan Leary, who cut a swath of destruction through the 56 player field, going 10-0 with an average margin of victory a hair shy of 15 points a game.

Bushway & Leary did have a scare in the semifinals, where Wayne McCarthy & Michael Vitale battled hard before falling 21-17.  The perfect night culminated in a 24-8 finals drilling of John Mahoney & Corey Rabeau.  The finals were not particularly close, as Bushway & Leary jumped out to a 16-1 lead and cruised home from there.  Bushway extended his leads in overall game wins, fourbaggers, 1st place finishes, and podiums with tonight’s performance; he has 3 wins and 5 podiums in 8 appearances.  This was Leary’s maiden voyage to the podium this year.

McCarthy & Vitale recovered from the semifinal loss to claim the final podium spot with a 28-16 win over Craig Anderson & Zack Hoover.

Top 3 PPR for the night were John Mahoney with 8.06, Wayne McCarthy a hair behind at 8.05, and Jesob Rockwell at 7.89. Mahoney also led all players with 9 fourbaggers.

Newcomer Chris Ferrick answered the call for airmail, and hit one bag with the pot at $740, banking a $185 win.  $555 will carry over to next week.

2/16/22: Riches Abound As Caram & McCarthy Claim Gold; Hoover Bangs Hole, Gets Rich

The name “Rich” and its derivatives finds its way to the podium again and again, and WCCC Wednesday Night at The Brook, presented by Route 1 Vapors, was no exception this week.

Richie Caram & Wayne McCarthy dusted the competition, going 7-0 en route to claiming the top spot, culminating in a 23-8 thumping of Rich Bushway & Brian Johnson in the finals.  McCarthy saved the best for last, posting his best PPR of the night in the final with a robust 9.29.  19 of his 28 bags found the hole, while a single solitary sack did not score for the man they call Sawdust.  Interestingly enough, Richie threw a perfect game in pool play, with 8 of 8 bags finding the hole.  In the 3rd place game, John Mahoney fired a huge 10.17 PPR over 6 rounds to help lead partner Travis O’Brien to a 22-2 blowout of Mike Gertz & Phil Jackson to claim the final podium spot.

Due to general stupidity, we only managed to get a picture tonight of our bronze medal winners, but since those sweet new Route 1 Vapors boards are there, we had to post it!

Top 3 PPR for the night were bunched very close, with Scott Pelletier at 8.20, Ryan Goding at 8.18, and Brian Johnson at 8.17.  Johnson and Rich Bushway led all players with 6 fourbaggers apiece.

In a case of deja vu all over again, Zack Hoover was pulled for airmail for the 2nd week in a row.  With a pot only $13 less than last week’s $1097, Zack could have courted disaster but instead got a little more rich than usual, hitting 2 bags for a $542 win.  That same $542 figure will roll over to next week.

2/9/22: Powerhouse Team of Bushway & Mahoney Live Up To Expectation; Hoover Vacuums Up Airmail Cash

Two top WCCC players were paired together, and the prediction that they would cruise to the title proved correct on WCCC Wednesday Night at The Brook, presented by Route 1 Vapors!

Once Rich Bushway & John Mahoney were drawn together, the word around The Brook was that they were the team to beat, and they lived up to that expectation with a dominant performance, going 8-0, including a 4 game cruise through the playoffs where their average margin of victory was 15.25.  That run culminated in a 28-12 spanking of another quality team in Brian Johnson & Phil Jackson.  Mahoney was particularly dominant in the final, posting an 8.78 PPR while draining 23 of 36 bags, a 64% clip.

The 3rd place game saw Mike McNamara Sr & Glenn Krick cruise to a 22-12 victory over Jim Leonard and Mike Pigatti.

Top three in PPR for the night were John Mahoney (for the 2nd week in a row) at 8.24, Brian Johnson at 7.96, and Steve Marshall at 7.95.  Marshall, along with Shane Bieber, led the night with 5 fourbaggers.  Special mention for Mr. Marshall having 24% of his rounds be fourbaggers tonight.

Airmail started at half mast after Steve Singlar claimed half the pot last week.  Zack Hoover got the call to throw airmail for the first time since 2/5/2020, and unlike on that occasion walked away with some dough, $274 to be exact.  $823 will roll over to next week.

2/2/22: Battle Of The Riches For The Title; Singlar With The Doublar On Airmail

Two veterans of the cornhole wars teamed up to make a dominant run to the title on WCCC Wednesday Night at The Brook, presented by Route 1 Vapors!

Rich Gabe & Scott Pelletier teamed up to go on a tear through the playoffs, outscoring opponents by an aggregate of 98-18 in their 4 playoff encounters, climaxing in their 28-6 blitzing of Rich Bushway & Jim Poulin in the finals.  Such was their dominance in the finals that out of 52 bags thrown by the duo, fully half of them were in the hole and only 2 total off the board.  Bushway & Poulin had won their three playoff games by a total of 7 points leading up to the finals, and simply could not keep up with the champs.  Gabe is now the first player to snag two tournament wins in 2022, and has done so in three appearances.

The 3rd place game was somewhat closer, as Jesob Rockwell & John Mahoney claimed the final podium spot with a 25-12 victory over Shane Bieber & Cathy MacKay.  Bieber had a chance to claim his WCCC-leading 4th podium of the year, but instead had Pelletier & Rockwell pull into a tie with him at three.

Top three in PPR for the night were John Mahoney at 8.09, Shane Bieber at 7.96, and Scott Pelletier at 7.89.  Bieber also led the night with 8 fourbaggers.

Airmail, after having a full pot rollover from the week before, reached $1795.  Steve Singlar, making his first appearance of the year, got the call to toe the line.  He drained much of the suspense by potting his first bag, and added another on the 3rd bag to claim half the pot.  $898 will roll over to next week.
